The Syndromic Tracking and Reporting System (STARS)

The first system of its kind in the U.S., this .NET application was designed to equip the Florida State Department of Health and participating hospitals with "real-time" syndromic surveillance tracking as an early warning system for potential public health threats.

As a part of the Homeland Defense Initiative, the Hillsborough County Health Department designed this system to detect non-specific conditions or symptoms (e.g. rash with fever) that may indicate a naturally occurring or intentionally spread outbreak. The STARS system facilitates the data entry process for hospital staff via a custom web interface, resulting in higher program participation and corresponding data accuracy.
